The Corrs Lost in Indonesia!

Chapter #8

Malang Apple Eating Contest and the Mystery of the "Satan" Rawon

After successfully "surviving" the Bromo chill and the direct exposure to Jim Corr’s version of the "volcanic dust hard drive," the VVIP entourage continued their journey down the mountains toward a cooler area famous for its fruits: Malang or Batu. The scenery shifted from dramatic volcanic landscapes to lush green hills adorned with vegetable patches and fruit gardens, especially apple orchards. The air felt fresher and friendlier, allowing The Corrs, who were still slightly cold, to shed one or two layers of their jackets.

"So, after a volcano, now we're going to an apple orchard?" Caroline asked from the back seat of the car, her eyes sparkling at the sight of apple trees in the distance. "Can the apples here explode too, like the klepon?"

Nisa laughed. "Relax, Caroline, the apples here are safe to bite into. In fact, they are known for being very sweet and crisp. They're called Malang Apples."

"Malang Apples? Like... unlucky apples?" Andrea asked, attempting to translate.

"No, Andrea," Reza explained, suppressing a smile. "Malang is the name of the city. The meaning isn't 'unlucky,' but perhaps... 'across'? Or 'to obstruct'? The history is a bit complicated."

"Ah, intriguing," Jim muttered. "Does the naming of the city based on the concept of 'obstruction' reflect the philosophical view of the East Javanese people regarding obstacles in life?"

Nisa and Reza could only exchange glances. Jim’s philosophical discussions apparently knew no time or place.

The first destination of the day was a large, charming apple-picking agro-tourism spot. As soon as they got out of the car, The Corrs were greeted by an expanse of apple trees whose ripe fruit looked inviting. Several baskets were prepared for those who wanted to experience the sensation of picking apples straight from the tree.

Andrea and Caroline, whose competitive spirit suddenly emerged (perhaps the effect of the fresh mountain air?), immediately had a "brilliant" idea.

"Hey, how about a contest?" Andrea challenged Caroline, her eyes defiant. "Who can eat the most apples in five minutes!"

"Agreed!" Caroline replied with equal enthusiasm. "The loser buys the apple juice later!"
