Chapter #28

Meditating Facing the Banda Api Volcano: Andrea Tries to Control the Smoke with Her Mind

The twenty-seventh day, and their last day in the mesmerizing Banda Islands, began with an exceptionally calm atmosphere. After breakfast of fried bananas with cinnamon and nutmeg sprinkles (Caroline ensured this wasn't residue from her 'perfume' yesterday), Nisa had an idea to utilize the bright morning and spectacular view for one last relaxation session before they continued their journey to the final paradise: Raja Ampat.

"How about we try meditating again this morning?" Nisa suggested as they were relaxing on the guesthouse terrace, gazing across the sea where the Banda Api Volcano stood firm, its peak occasionally emitting a thin puff of white smoke into the bright blue sky. "The view is very supportive for finding inner peace."

The Corrs' reactions were varied. Sharon seemed agreeable; she genuinely enjoyed the meditation sessions (even though she often lost focus because of her friends). Caroline shrugged, "Fine by me, as long as there are no distracting grasshoppers or bees again." Jim nodded slowly, likely seeing this as an opportunity to 'communicate' deeper with the island's volcanic energy.

Only Andrea looked slightly hesitant. "Meditating again? Facing an active volcano? Nisa, is this safe? What if it suddenly coughs louder?"

"Relax, Andrea," Reza reassured her with a smile. "The Banda Api Volcano is considered 'friendly.' Its activity is constantly monitored. And our distance from here is very safe. Just think of the thin smoke as the breath of a sleeping mountain."

"A mountain's breath that could turn into a fiery rage at any moment?" Andrea muttered, but she finally agreed to join. Perhaps the effect of the nutmeg juice yesterday still made her feel a bit more 'brave' (or slightly weirder?).

They searched for the perfect spot. Not in the ordinary pavilion or terrace, but Nisa led them up to one of the bastions of the Belgica Fortress, which was quiet in the morning. From the height of the old fortress, the view of the Banda Api Volcano felt closer, more personal, yet still safe. They spread out pandanus mats on the cool stone floor of the fortress, sitting cross-legged directly facing the iconic volcano.

The sea breeze blew gently, carrying the scent of salt and spices. The sound of small waves breaking on the beach below was faint. There was no yoga instructor this time; Nisa simply guided them with simple instructions.

"Let's close our eyes," Nisa began in a calm voice. "Feel the warmth of the morning sun on our skin, feel the sea breeze. Listen to the sounds of nature around us. And feel the presence of the Banda Api Volcano before us. Not as a threat, but as part of the extraordinary beauty and power of this nature."

She continued to guide their breathing. "Take a deep breath... feel the energy of this island entering you. Exhale slowly... release all tension, all worries..."
